To create a more efficient and effortless experience for riders, CapMetro has introduced a . With two new ways to pay, the new system launched in February and has rolled out customer updates throughout the spring for a smooth transition from traditional bus passes and plastic cards. This is the first major upgrade to the CapMetro fares program since 2020, which not only keeps up with technological advances but is one step closer to providing Central Texas transit users with an experience similar to major transit cities.
New system upgrades are an exciting first step in a larger fare plan that will change the way customers ride public transit in Central Texas. Bus and Rail are now equipped with brand new scanners to make contactless payments easier and boarding even faster. In addition to the new scanners, CapMetro introduced automatic fare capping on both physical and digital payments, so customers don’t ever have to pay the full cost of a daily or monthly pass up front again!

What is Fare Capping? How Does It Work?
Fare capping takes the guess work out of riding public transit by removing the hassle of deciding what fare type is best for a trip. Rides are tracked and charges are automatically stopped once riders have reached the amount equal to daily and monthly pass prices. CapMetro customers can pay- per-ride on Bus or Rail instead of buying the previously available time-based passes, ensuring they always get the lowest price.
Two New Ways to Pay
Ease of use was the primary reason behind the introduction of these new payment methods. Digital payments with the Umo app and physical payments with the new CapMetro Reloadable Fare Card offer customers the same benefits, allowing them to choose the option that best suits their riding preferences. Both options work seamlessly onboard, automatically stop charges when daily and monthly fare cap limits are reached and can have money loaded virtually anywhere*.
The Umo app is used by transit agencies across the country and seeks to streamline fare payments and connect riders to every mode of transportation available to them. CapMetro has partnered with Umo to integrate Bus and Rail services/schedules to make riding transit simple. With the Umo app for digital payments, customers add money to their wallet and pay per ride. The price of a ride is deducted while boarding when you scan the code on your phone. Once you plan your trip, the rest is taken care of, and all while on-the-go!

No matter which way you choose to pay, CapMetro makes planning a trip easier with the Transit app. CapMetro introduced their partnership with Transit in early 2024 and began to transition riders who prefer planning on-the-go from the CapMetro app to the Transit app. The CapMetro app was officially retired in February of 2025 and is no longer available. The Transit app features real-time schedules, maps, and locations as well as step-by-step guidance with GO which allows riders to track their trip from start to finish. With Transit Royale (a FREE upgrade provided to all CapMetro users) riders have access to expanded trip results, including Rail, Pickup and Bikeshare, and unlimited transit schedules for planning ahead. The Transit app is used by transit agencies in over 300 US cities and 25 countries across the world and seeks to connect communities through reliable public transportation and easy to use wayfinding technology.
